What To Expect When Painting Your Cabinets
Step 1: Homeowner Preparation
Must be completed before work begins
To ensure the project runs efficiently, please remove all items from:
• Countertops
• Inside cabinets & drawers
• Tables & work surfaces
• Tops of cabinets
• All wall décor (pictures, frames, clocks, artwork)
A clean workspace allows for a smoother finish and faster turnaround.
Step 2: During the Project
Your kitchen will temporarily operate as a workspace. This means:
- Plastic containment walls will be installed
- All cabinet boxes will be masked and covered
- Floors will be protected
- Countertops will be tightly wrapped and protected
- All appliances remaining in the room will be carefully covered and protected
- Access to the kitchen may be limited at times
We respect your home and aim to keep disruption as minimal as possible.
Step 3: The Refinishing Process
OFF-SITE Finishing (Doors & Drawers)
At our spray facility, each piece goes through a professional multi-step finishing system:
- Cleaning & degreasing
- Machine & hand sanding
- Two coats of primer
- Finished with two coats of conversion varnish
- Final inspection for a flawless result
- Cabinet boxes are prepped, primed, and sprayed on-site
- The kitchen is masked and protected professionally
- HEPA filtration helps reduce dust, but no finish can be guaranteed dust-free.
Why Choose Rhodes Custom Finishes For Cabinet Repainting Projects
- Complete Degreasing Before Sanding: Removes hidden grime that causes premature coating failure. Skipping this step guarantees problems down the road.
- Precision Sanding & Dust Control: Festool sanders + HEPA-certified dust extractors keep your home clean while preparing a perfect surface.
- Exclusive Oak Grain Filler: In-house formula eliminates 90–95% of oak grain for a smooth, maple-like finish. Competitors often use store-bought fillers that crack or fail over time.
- Premium Coating Application: Always sprayed for a flawless factory finish. We never brush or roll.
- 5-Year Warranty: Guaranteed against coating failure for peace of mind.
- Proven Experience: Largest kitchen cabinet refinishing company in St. Louis & St. Charles, completing 200+ kitchens annually.
- Dedicated Cabinet Teams: Our specialists do only cabinets, ensuring skill and consistency.
- REVAMP Hybrid Refacing: New doors & drawers (customer’s choice), painted boxes to match, and soft-close hinges — with existing drawer sliders reused for efficiency.

RCF Standard: Solvent-Borne Conversion Varnish
- Top-of-the-line coating for cabinets and woodworking.
- Industry-leading resistance to water and hand oil. The two most significant causes of coating failure.
- Chosen for unmatched longevity, performance, and finishing quality.
Water-Based Lacquers (Competitor Standard)
- Commonly used by many professional refinishers.
- Performs well but still lacks the hardness and long-term durability of our system.
Water-Based Enamel (DIY / Entry Level)
- Primarily for basic trim and cabinet projects.
- Not recommended for everyday kitchen use.
- Highly susceptible to water damage and hand oil exposure.
